Who?

The Survivors Whom the Lord Calls

According to the prophet Joel, a pocket of believers (identified as the survivors whom the Lord calls) will find refuge on Mount Zion in Jerusalem for the duration of The Great Tribulation.

Joel 2:31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.32 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved;for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance,as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls. (NIV)

Worthy to Escape

Luke 21:36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”(NIV)

In the end, the only ones the Bible identifies 'standing' with Christ is 'the 144,000'.

Revelation 14:1 Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. (NIV)

The Redeemed

Revelation 14:3 And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. (NIV)

These are the male believers that will be alive at Christ's advent.  They, following God's survival instructions, will be on God's place-of-refuge for the 3½ years of The Great Tribulation.

Children of Israel

The 144,000 will consist of 12,000 men from each of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Revelation 7:4 Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel. From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben 12,000, from the tribe of Gad 12,000, 6 from the tribe of Asher 12,000, from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000, from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000, 7 from the tribe of Simeon 12,000, from the tribe of Levi 12,000, from the tribe of Issachar 12,000, 8 from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000, from the tribe of Joseph 12,000, from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000.(NIV)

The 144,000 represent the 12 tribes of Israel.  However, Gentile-believers are not excluded from this group. The Bible contains many references that support the idea that Gentiles-believers will be a part of The 144,000.

Abraham's Seed

Gentiles become "Abraham's seed" and equal heirs to the promises made to Israel when they accept Christ's sacrifice.

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.(NIV)

Graphed Olive Branches

Gentiles that accept Christ are the wild olive branches that a graphed to the olive tree (Israel).

Romans 11:17And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; (KJV)

Equal Inheritance

The promise of equal inheritance was extended to the Gentiles even in the times of the Old Testament.

Ezekiel 47:21 So shall ye divide this land unto you according to the tribes of Israel.22 And it shall come to pass, that ye shall divide it by lot for an inheritance unto you, and to the strangers that sojourn among you, which shall beget children among you: and they shall be unto you as born in the country among the children of Israel; they shall have inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel.23 And it shall come to pass, that in what tribe the stranger sojourneth, there shall ye give him his inheritance, saith the Lord God. (KJV)

According to these and other references, Gentiles have not been excluded from being part of The 144,000.

Not Defiled with Women

Revelation 14:4 These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. (KJV)

"Not defiled with women" is another way to say that The 144,000 are male.

An Old Testament Census

The sealing of The 144,000 resembles an Old Testament census which began when Israel was in the Wilderness.  There we found that only men, 20 years and older, were counted.

Numbers 1:1 And the Lord spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2 Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls; 3 From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies. (KJV)

This, though woman and children weren't counted, is not to say that women and children have been excluded from being on Mount Zion and part of the survivors whom the Lord calls.

Daughters of Zion

Seven women for every male count will be on Mount Zion.  Isaiah identifies these women as "the daughters of Zion".

Isaiah 4:1 And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach. 2 In that day shall the branch of the Lord be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel. And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning. And the Lord will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence. And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the day time from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain. (KJV)

These are the survivors whom the Lord calls.  And the fourth element of Bible prophecy is:

When?
